Novata is a public benefit corporation created and funded by a unique consortium of foundations and private sector companies including the Ford Foundation, the Omidyar Network, S&P Global, and Hamilton Lane. We are a for-profit, mission-driven company with the goal of empowering the private markets to build a more inclusive and sustainable form of capitalism. By bringing together the brightest minds in financial data, private equity, social justice and inclusive capitalism, we aim to build the best technology and tools for the private markets to better collect, analyze, benchmark and report ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) data. We have an experienced and diverse team who are as ambitious about growing a successful company as we are about making an impact.

About the Product and Engineering team

We’re a team of around 55 mixed discipline individuals, split into 6 cross-functional squads. We focus on outcomes, not output, hence we like to be quite experimental and study the data to uncover where the real value is for our customers. Squads have the autonomy to decide how they want to work best, but it just so happens that all squads currently work in 2 week sprints, with the goal of delivering a thin vertical slice of value every iteration.

Requirements

As one of our Full Stack Engineers, you’ll be embedded into one of our cross-functional engineering squads where your primary focus will be to develop our ESG data and reporting platform. You’d be placed into the squad that best suits your area of speciality, but regardless of which squad you join you’ll get to work closely with a variety of stakeholders such as product managers, UX designers and quality assurance coaches.

We only hire full-stack engineers, so you’ll get to work across the entire stack, creating new components, building new backend services, working with data and stitching together cloud services to create solutions that deliver real value to our users.

We use and teach

  • TypeScript, React and Node.js for our platform
  • Postgres, Metabase and Snowflake for data storage
  • GitHub for source control and Jira for change management
  • Docker to package our services into containers
  • Harness, GitHub and Argo CD for CI/CD
  • DataDog for monitoring and observability
  • AWS for infrastructure, specifically EKS, RDS and S3
  • Terragrunt and Terraform for infrastructure orchestration

You will spend your time

  • Applying your skills, knowledge and experience to develop and maintain our ESG reporting platform.
  • Collaborating with the members of your squad, breaking problems down into value focused deliverables.
  • Learning and developing, building depth of knowledge in the technologies that comprise our 3 engineering pillars, Frontend, Backend and DevOps.
  • Contributing to our guilds, sharing what you’ve learnt and ensuring that knowledge and best practices are socialized throughout the collective.
  • Coaching and mentoring the more junior team members, helping them to grow by improving their skills and abilities.
  • Fulfill additional duties as requested.

You should apply if

  • 3 or more years of demonstrable experience developing testable, modular and extensible code that covers that entire web application stack using TypeScript, React and Node.js.
  • You have a start-up mentality, are responsible, energetic, ambitious, adaptable and willing to jump in wherever you might be needed.
  • You have a product mindset, are passionate about customer outcomes and you want to make data-informed decisions.
  • You aren’t afraid to make decisions, have good judgment and act with purpose and intention to progress our mission.
  • You like to approach problem solving pragmatically, and appreciate the importance of building the right thing vs building the thing right.
  • You have a keen attention to detail, a no-compromise approach to quality and are committed to delivering the best experience possible to our users.

Our interview process

Our interview process involves 3 main stages.

  1. An initial screening call where we’ll ask questions about your current and recent roles with a focus on you technical
  2. A 2-stage technical assessment, starting with a take-home exercise and then a follow up with some of our engineers.
  3. A final stage interview with one of our principle engineers and a member of the leadership team.

End-to-end, the process typically takes 3-4 weeks but we’re happy to work around your schedule and move faster or slower if need be.
